Favorite products for hair and makeup

I recently have revamped my vanity and wanted to share. As an organization fanatic, I absolutely LOVE watching set-up and storage videos on YouTube and reading how other people arrange their makeup on blogs.

I just wanted to share some before and afters of my organization and maybe give you some more information on the Muji storage containers, because they are definitely an investment.

My vanity is the Micke desk from IKEA.

Not all things fit in the 5 drawer such as:

  • bareMinerals foundation
  • The Body Shop mineral foundation
  • Benefit Erase Paste
  • old Benefit boxed blushes (that silvery looking one is a Coralista)
  • The New e.l.f Smudge Pots.

I now have the Muji Large 2 Drawer stacked on top of my original Muji 5 drawer.

I absolutely love my Muji drawers. They come protected extremely well and both times have arrived sooner than my estimated arrival date. Be careful when you are unwrapping, if there is a crack, DO NOT open the bag it is in, otherwise they might not return it.

For the most part, everything is in order of how I would apply it on my face from the top down.

My brushes are in various jam jars that I cleaned out. I think it looks really cute and saves you a few bucks instead of buying one. The glass container on top holding my BB creams and primers is an old Bath & Body Works 3 wick candle.

Tell me, how do you store your makeup? If you have a blog post or video on your makeup storage, please link it below because I would love to see 🙂

IMG_2840 Products seem to go all at once! I have used up a lot of things recently and wanted to review what I have run out of.

REPURCHASECovergirl CG Smoothers BB Cream: This was the first tinted moisturizer I ever used because it was the tinted moisturizer my sister used (and I believe still does too!). It moisturizes well and gives very sheer coverage, but paired with my mineral foundation, it works well for everyday. I have seen this product’s packaging get three facelifts now

REPURCHASE |  NYX Cream Blush in 02 Natural: This is my favorite formula of cream blush that I have used. It has great staying power but is easily blendable. I like to stipple it on. My old one was just that…old, and it was time to go.

REPURCHASE |  True Blue Spa Super Softening Hand Lotion: I love this hand cream. The scent is delicious. I use it at night because it doesn’t absorb quickly and can leave the hands with that lotion-y feel. During the day, I like to use Vaseline Hand & Nail Conditioning Lotion.

I forgot to slip these in the master picture

REPURCHASE | Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover: This is my favorite face wash. It keeps my skin happy and removes ALL of my makeup.

REPURCHASE | e.l.f Makeup Mist & Set: If I get a little heavy handed on the powder, this setting spray does the trick. I have not used a high end setting spray but this seems to do the trick.

REPURCHASE | Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer: This has been my daily moisturizer for years now. It is hydrating and I really do feel like it calms my sensitive skin, just like it claims. I also like that it has SPF 15. I was contemplating the First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face Cream, but ended up falling back on something I know I already love.

REPLACEThe Body Shop Bronzing Powder: This bronzer is so old that it’s been discontinued. While it has been so good to me, it’s time to go.

On the recommendation of a fellow blogger, I went ahead and got Benefit’s Hoola bronzer. I had always been a little afraid of it because it looked to dark, but I tried it in the shop and loved it.

REPLACE | Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream: I started using an eye cream when a wonderful hotel concierge made the suggestion. “Start now before the wrinkles come, honey!” Following his orders, I made this purchase and have again three times since. It is very hydrating and I can’t say that I have any complaints.

I’m not replacing because I don’t like this eye cream but I just want to change it up. I am replacing with Benefit’s It’s Potent! Eye Cream.

REPLACE | Lush Dream Cream: I bought this cream to dry and relieve my eczema. No prescription or over the counter lotion has ever relieved my symptoms. This cream did a fairly good job but I mainly just enjoyed how creamy it felt on my skin.

There are other creams I like just as much for all over the body that are less expensive. As far as my eczema goes, I am trying Gold Bond’s Ultimate Eczema Relief Lotion.

REPLACE | Benefit Instant Brow Pencil: This is my second one of this pencil. I like the waxy feel to the pencil and the color matches my brows well. They look defined without being overdone.

I wanted to change it up just because I’m getting more into my brows and wanted to see what was in the drugstore. I got the Maybelline Brow Pencil in soft brown.

What products can’t you break up with? Have you tired any of these products? Let me know!

I wanted to try a new makeup look for my glasses and this is how it turned out!

SHOPPING TIP: I don’t have optical insurance, so glasses can get pricey. I live in a college town and called around to a few different eye doctors and ended up finding one that gave student discounts. Make a few calls and you could save some big bucks!

Eyes: I used my Maybelline Color Tattoo in Inked in Pink all over the lid and deepened the crease with the middle shade in this Wet n Wild Eye Shadow Trio. I lined the outer two thirds of my lash line with the same brown. On the inner third I used this Wet n Wild cream shadow pencil in Pixie to really brighten up my eyes. I applied two thick coats of Covergirl Lash Blast (waterproof) to make sure my lashes looked nice and thick.

Concealer: First, I swept away any shimmery fallout I might have had from the shadow. I applied Benefit’s hydrating concealer Fake Up (light) to eliminate discoloration. I set this with elf’s Eye Brightener in Buff.

Brows: Stick with the brow routine that works best for you, and perhaps consider taking an extra minute to define and darken. I used Benefit’s Gimme Brow in medium/deep.

Cheeks/Lips: I used Benefit’s Hervana for a healthy, pink flush. On my lips I used Revlon’s Colorburst lip butter in Strawberry Shortcake.

Overall, the look is more shimmery than what I would typically wear during the day, but behind glasses, I think it works well. Have fun my fellow four eyes!

I love e.l.f. makeup. While some of the products are hit or miss, there are some really great gems in all of the lines! Some of the products are still in the package because it came in two orders

Mineral Foundation (Light): I currently use BareMinerals, so when I saw this I wanted to give it a try. I’ll review it and do a thorough comparison to BareMinerals later.

Mineral Eyeshadow Primer (Blush): I wanted an inexpensive primer because I use a one even when I don’t wear eyeshadow (I have oily lids and don’t want my mascara to smudge). This color is not how it is pictured on the website but I still like it.

Studio Hydrating Under Eye Primer: This product looked very intriguing. The photo reminded me of my Benefit “That Gal” primer so I had to throw it in my cart. So far, the two seem relatively similar. I’ll do a review.

Studio Moisturizing Lipstick (Coral Cutie): I’m loving the orange lip trend and wanted to give it a try without spending too much. The formula was creamier than I expected, a pleasant surprise. I’ll try and do a summer look with this bold color soon!

Studio Concealer (Ivory): This color is too orange but I’ll play around and see if I can make it work.

Studio Makeup Lock & Seal: I’ve started experimenting more with wearing my loose shadows wet as liner and I thought this would be a great product. Plus with summer coming up, a little extra staying power never hurt. So far, I really like how it works and think it definitely increases the staying power of my eye makeup.

Comes with a brush and small mixing pot

Studio Tone Correcting Powder in Cool: The product is, eh. It is not the best quality powder and is pretty chalky. It’s a decent setting powder but I don’t see it “correcting.”

When swirled together, the color is just an off white

Studio Contouring Blush & Bronzing Cream (St. Lucia): I am very impressed with this cream blush and bronzer! I like it a lot and definitely gives me a bronze glow without looking too dark.

First (accidental) Bolt Blogs giveaway went to one of my roommates! My order came with two of this product, so congratulations and enjoy your perfectly sculpted cheek bones 😉

Studio Lip Definer & Shaper (natural/nude): I have mixed feelings about this. I like the rosy colored shade but it is not the creamiest of formulas. The defining side is much too shimmery, but I did use it under my brow bone and liked it.

Bonus: One end has a built in sharpener in the cap! in Back to Basics and Pearls of Wisdom

Essential Smudge Pot in Back to Basics and Pearls of Wisdom: I originally just bought Back to Basics and was so impressed I ordered Pearls of Wisdom. The pigmentation in the white is not what the bronze is. I would pass on the Pearls of Wisdom. But the Back to Basics has great staying power and is blendable.

Essential Eyelash Curler: I wanted an eyelash curler for my makeup bag like the concealer so for $1 this was perfect! Bonus: It came with an extra rubber pad.

Tell me, what are some of your favorite e.l.f products? Want me to review anything further in depth? Let me know!

My wish list is always a little ambitious, but a girl can dream, right? Here are some things I have my eye on for the Spring!

Screen Shot 2014-04-05 at 6.31.41 PM

1. Too Faced A La Mode EyesThis eye shadow palette is a part of the Too Faced summer line and I am in LOVE with these colors. They look absolutely gorgeous and overall seems to have good reviews so far. Plus, I love the Parisian, nautical theme!

2. Too Faced MeltedThese “liquified long wear lipsticks” look amazing and super vibrant! I have my eye set on Peony and Coral.

Right now, Too Faced is having a giveaway where you can win the Melted collection AND a matching bathing suit for each color from L*Space! Like Too Faced on Facebook and use this link to enter!

3. Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening BlushThis blush has been on my radar for awhile now. I think the glow it gives would be perfect for Spring.

4. First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face CreamI running low on my current face cream and think this might be next up to try. It has SPF 30 (great for summer) and looks like a nice all around face cream.

5. Sephora Collection – Classic Mineral Powder Brush #45: I’m in the market for a new mineral foundation brush and I think this one might be the ticket. Sephora brushes have really impressive reviews so I think I’m going to give this one a try.
